The United Nations has issued a major warning that global temperatures could rise to unprecedented levels next year, potentially breaking previous temperature records and causing significant changes in weather patterns across different parts of the world.

One of the major factors behind the concern is El Niño, a natural climate pattern that develops in the Pacific Ocean and typically occurs every two to seven years.

This time, however, there are concerns that the phenomenon could become unusually strong, leading to what is being described as a “Super El Niño”.

Under normal conditions, winds over the Pacific Ocean generally blow from east to west, pushing warm surface water towards Asia and Australia. This causes warm water to accumulate in the western Pacific.

During an El Niño event, these winds weaken. As a result, warm water begins moving eastwards towards the Americas, causing the eastern Pacific Ocean to become unusually warm.

That shift can disrupt weather patterns around the world.

Some regions could experience unusually heavy rainfall and flooding, while others could face prolonged drought and extreme heat.

For some countries, months of severe heat and drought could threaten crops and agricultural production. Other regions could instead face intense rainfall, storms and flooding for extended periods.

According to the UN report cited in the warning, at least 50 million people could be directly affected and face the risk of severe food shortages. The report also warns that no region of the world may remain completely unaffected by the changing weather patterns.

Australia could face an increased risk of bushfires because of drier conditions, while Indonesia could also experience similar threats.

Pakistan and India could see weaker monsoon rainfall, increasing the risk of drought and potentially causing serious damage to crops and agricultural output.

Meanwhile, parts of South America could face intense rainfall and flooding, while the southern United States could also experience significant weather disruptions.

These changes are linked to the wider global impact of El Niño, which can alter atmospheric circulation and influence temperatures, rainfall, drought and extreme weather events far beyond the Pacific region.

The potential strength of the phenomenon is therefore being closely watched by climate scientists, as a powerful El Niño could add to the effects of already rising global temperatures.

If the expected conditions develop, 2027 could bring extreme heat to several parts of the world, while other regions could face drought, heavy rainfall and flooding.

The impact, however, would not be the same everywhere. El Niño affects different regions in different ways, making its consequences difficult to predict precisely months in advance.
