According to the fire department, the blaze started in a kitchen adjacent to the mayor’s office. Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control and extinguished it.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The fire department deployed 11 fire tenders, two water tankers and a snorkel to tackle the blaze. Additional firefighting vehicles were also called in as the fire was classified as a third-degree incident.
The incident occurred a day after three people, including a woman, reportedly experienced breathing difficulties when a fire broke out at an old-clothes factory in Karachi’s Landhi Export Processing Zone (EPZ).
The latest incident also comes months after a deadly fire at Karachi’s Gul Plaza shopping centre killed more than 70 people, raising serious concerns about fire safety and emergency preparedness in the city.
The three-storey commercial complex housed nearly 1,200 businesses across its basement, mezzanine and floors. Shops selling wedding clothes, toys, household goods and children’s clothing were among those affected by the blaze.
