According to a Jamaat e Islami spokesperson, the two sides agreed to convene a meeting of their negotiating committees before a proposed meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman.
During the conversation, Rana Sanaullah told Liaquat Baloch that the prime minister wanted to meet Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman in line with his earlier commitment. The discussion focused on resolving differences and advancing talks on public demands.
The spokesperson said the negotiating committees would discuss the demand for abolishing the petroleum levy, measures to provide relief to the public and broader economic issues. The meeting is expected to help establish a clear agenda for further negotiations.
Liaquat Baloch said Jamaat e Islami had paused its ‘Super Long March’at the prime minister’s request. However, he maintained that the party remained committed to its demands aimed at addressing inflation and the economic difficulties faced by the public.
He said the party’s movement would continue until a substantial relief package was announced.
Liaquat Baloch also told Rana Sanaullah that Jamaat-e-Islami was continuing its nationwide public outreach campaign against the petroleum levy. The campaign includes public gatherings, submission of memorandums and the collection of signatures from citizens.
Jamaat-e-Islami argues that abolishing the petroleum levy could help reduce the fuel cost burden on consumers. The government and the party are also expected to discuss other economic demands during the proposed negotiations.
Details of the negotiating committees’ meeting, the proposed meeting between the two leaders and any final decision on the petroleum levy have yet to be announced.
