The loss includes a $72 billion accounting charge linked to an increase in the estimated value of bonds that can be converted into company shares. The charge does not represent an equivalent cash outflow from the company's operations.
Anthropic is reportedly preparing for an initial public offering, or IPO, in November. Following its latest financial disclosures, some investors are reconsidering the company's valuation, with expectations reportedly falling to around $1.5 trillion.
The company spent nearly $9 billion on computing capacity and infrastructure during the first half of 2026, compared with $2.3 billion a year earlier. Anthropic has also committed to spending at least $518 billion over the next decade on cloud services, computing and infrastructure.
Despite the mounting costs, Anthropic's revenue has continued to grow. At an investor meeting on October 14, the company reportedly disclosed that third-quarter revenue rose 45 percent to $16.8 billion from the previous quarter.
However, some investors expressed concern over slowing revenue growth, raising questions about whether the massive investments required to develop artificial intelligence will generate sufficient returns.
Anthropic's IPO is expected to be closely watched across the technology sector, particularly as rival AI company OpenAI considers a potential public listing next year.
The company has gained popularity through Claude Code, its AI-powered coding assistant, which developers use to write software and build applications.
