De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) said gold stored in London can be traded more easily compared with reserves held in New York and Ottawa.
According to the bank, the Netherlands had 612.4 tons of gold reserves at the end of 2025, with a total value of €72.2 billion.
Before the latest transfer, 31.3% of the Dutch central bank’s gold was stored in New York, while 19.7% was held in Ottawa. Following the move, the share of gold held in the United States has fallen to 18.5%, while the share in Canada has also declined to 18.5%.
Meanwhile, the share of the Netherlands’ gold reserves stored in London has increased from 18.1% to 32.1%. Another 30.8% of the country’s gold remains stored in the Netherlands.
The bank said the transfer was carried out partly through gold purchases and sales and partly through the physical movement of gold.
As part of the operation, more than 27 tons of gold were moved from the United States and Canada to the Dutch city of Zeist. An equivalent amount of gold was then transferred from Zeist to London.
DNB said the move was made against the backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions and the need to ensure that its gold reserves remain easily accessible for trading.
