Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Majed Al Ansari, said Gulf states need to strengthen their own defence and security capabilities while continuing to work with international partners.
“Strategic alliances with the United States are a good thing, and the support of partners is important,” Al Ansari said, but added that Gulf countries could not leave responsibility for their security entirely to external allies.
He said greater self-reliance was essential for the region’s future security. Gulf states should strengthen their defence capabilities, security systems and ability to respond effectively to emergencies and potential crises.
Al Ansari said Qatar and other Gulf countries still needed their partners and allies, but they also had to play an active role in protecting their own security.
He also called for stronger cooperation among Gulf countries, saying regional states should improve their capabilities and coordinate more closely on common security challenges.
According to Al Ansari, long-term stability in the Gulf cannot depend solely on the presence or support of outside powers. Regional countries need to become more capable and independent in managing their own security concerns while continuing to benefit from partnerships with allies.
The Qatari spokesperson also addressed diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Iran. He said Qatar was awaiting a bilateral agreement between Iran and Oman ahead of potential US-Iran talks.
Al Ansari’s comments come amid continued attention to security developments in the Gulf and relations between Washington and Tehran. Qatar’s position reflects a broader emphasis on combining international partnerships with stronger regional defence capabilities, diplomatic engagement and cooperation among Gulf states.
