Only 33 per cent of Americans said they approved of Trump’s performance as president, marking the third consecutive Reuters/Ipsos poll in which his approval rating stood at that level.
The low rating could pose a challenge for Republicans as they prepare to defend their narrow majorities in Congress in the November 3 midterm elections.
The poll also found that Democrats appeared more enthusiastic about the upcoming elections. Some 46 per cent of self-identified Democrats said they were “very enthusiastic” about voting, compared with 31 per cent of Republicans.
Among independent voters, 36 per cent said they would vote for Democratic candidates if congressional elections were held today, while 22 per cent chose Republicans.
Trump’s approval rating has remained at levels last briefly recorded during the early months of his first presidency. It is also below the 47 per cent approval rating he recorded earlier in his current term.
His current rating is lower than the lowest approval rating recorded by his predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden, who fell to 35 per cent in October 2024.
Economic concerns are also weighing on Trump’s presidency. The poll found that 71 per cent of Americans, including four in 10 Republicans, disapproved of his handling of the cost of living.
Gasoline prices have also risen since the US began bombing Iran in February. Only 36 per cent of Americans said they approved of Trump’s handling of the war.
The conflict has involved periods of reduced fighting, but missile strikes between the US and Iran have intensified in recent days. Iran has also largely blocked a major route for global oil shipments since the conflict began, adding to concerns over energy prices.
For the past month, registered voters surveyed by Reuters/Ipsos have said Democrats have better ideas for managing the economy than Republicans. It is the first time in about a decade that Democrats have held an advantage on the issue.
The four-day poll surveyed 1,167 adults across the United States and had a margin of error of three percentage points.
