The beach closures come after authorities in neighbouring Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah introduced temporary restrictions in some coastal areas amid concerns over the spread of oil in the sea.
According to Reuters, Ras Al Khaimah’s Department of Public Services announced the closure on Saturday in a statement also shared by Ras Al Khaimah Police. Officials did not specify the exact reason for the latest beach closure.
Oil Spill in UAE Waters Triggers Coastal Restrictions
The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said on Friday that response efforts were underway after oil leaked from an oil tanker at sea. Authorities were working to contain the spill and assess environmental conditions in affected areas to protect the marine ecosystem.
In Umm Al Quwain, officials ordered the temporary closure of all beaches and coastal areas until technical teams complete their inspections and determine the necessary safety measures.
Authorities also urged fishermen and other people entering the sea to stay away from affected areas and follow official safety instructions.
In Sharjah, officials temporarily closed Al Hamriyah Beach as a precautionary measure. The beach is located near the border with Umm Al Quwain along the UAE’s northern coast.
Residents Report Unusual Odour Along the Coast
Residents in parts of Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain reported an unusual and unpleasant smell following the oil spill. The odour was particularly noticeable in Umm Al Quwain on Friday.
The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment said the smell did not pose a health risk. However, environmental assessments and monitoring were continuing in affected areas.
Officials have not yet disclosed the name of the oil tanker involved or the cause of the incident.
Oil Spill Raises Concerns Over Marine Environment
Oil spills can threaten marine ecosystems, coastal habitats and wildlife, making rapid containment and environmental monitoring important. The extent of the impact from this incident remains unclear as authorities continue to assess the affected areas.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns over maritime security in the Gulf, where attacks on commercial vessels following the start of the US-Israel war against Iran have increased attention on the safety of major shipping routes.
The Gulf is a critical corridor for international trade and oil transportation. Disruptions in the region can affect shipping operations while also creating potential risks for the marine environment.
Ras Al Khaimah’s Beaches and Tourism
Ras Al Khaimah is one of the UAE’s northern emirates and is known for its beaches, resorts and tourism attractions. The temporary closures could affect public access to coastal areas while authorities investigate the situation and assess environmental risks.
The emirate is also home to Al Marjan Island, where US-based Wynn Resorts is developing a major resort and casino project. The company obtained the UAE’s first commercial gaming licence in 2024 and said in February that it expected the project to open in the first quarter of 2027.
Authorities have yet to announce when the affected beaches will reopen. The timing is likely to depend on environmental assessments and official safety decisions.
