Under the revised rates, petrol will now cost Rs266.17 per litre, up from Rs258.17.

The price of high-speed diesel (HSD) has also been raised by Rs5.16 per litre, bringing it to Rs280.86 from the previous Rs275.70.

Impact on consumers

Petrol is primarily used by commuters operating small vehicles, motorcycles and rickshaws. Any increase directly affects middle- and lower-middle-income households that depend on private transport for daily mobility.

High-speed diesel, by contrast, underpins much of the country’s commercial transport and agricultural activity. It fuels heavy goods vehicles, buses, trains and farm machinery such as tractors and tube wells.

Because of its central role in freight and food supply chains, an increase in diesel prices is typically considered inflationary. Higher transport and input costs often translate into elevated prices for essential commodities, particularly vegetables and other perishable food items.
