In a decree dated October 29, Judge Zahid Bashir of the Lahore Family Court ruled in favour of Mahnaz’s request to end the marriage.

She had filed a petition for khula on June 22, alleging that she and her daughters had endured “extreme mental torment” for two decades. She also claimed that she had been bearing household expenses on her own because her husband had not provided financial support.

According to the petition, Mahnaz and her family members had made several attempts to address Moammar Rana’s behaviour, but he allegedly refused to seek treatment for addiction or stop his violent outbursts.

Her petition cited alleged physical and mental abuse of her and their daughters as grounds for seeking the dissolution of the marriage. One of their daughters was also named as a witness.

Before the court issued its decision, both parties were called for mediation under the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process in an attempt to settle the matter.

A letter from the ADR Centre III in Lahore stated that Moammar Rana attended the mediation proceedings, while Mahnaz declined to participate. The matter was subsequently referred back to the family court.
