How it was stored, how many days have passed, and changes in its smell and texture should all be considered.
Cheese is a nutritious food that provides protein and calcium, helping support muscles and dental health. Experts say proper storage can help keep cheese fresh for longer.
To store cheese in the refrigerator, it can be fully submerged in clean water and placed in an airtight container. The water should completely cover the cheese and should be changed daily or every other day. Keeping cheese at around 1 to 4 degrees Celsius is recommended, and it can generally remain in good condition for around five to seven days.
For longer storage, cheese can be cut into small pieces and placed in an airtight package or freezer bag. After removing it from the freezer, it is better to thaw it gradually in the refrigerator rather than placing it directly in a warm area. If the cheese becomes slightly hard, placing it briefly in lukewarm water may help restore some softness.
Another method is to wrap the cheese in a clean, lightly damp cotton or muslin cloth and place it inside a clean airtight container. The cloth can be lightly moistened again if it becomes completely dry, but it should only remain damp rather than excessively wet.
There can be several reasons why cheese turns yellow, including prolonged storage, unsuitable temperatures, exposure to air or excess moisture, and improper packaging. Therefore, it is important to check not only the color but also the smell, surface and texture.
Cheese should not be eaten if it develops an unusually strong or sour smell, becomes unusually sticky, develops visible mold or shows other significant and abnormal changes in color. If mold appears, it is safer to discard the cheese rather than simply cutting away the affected portion.
Cheese should also not be left outside the refrigerator for long periods. Take out only the amount needed and return the rest to the refrigerator immediately. This is especially important in hot weather, when bacteria can multiply more quickly in perishable foods.
When buying fresh cheese, consumers should also check its packaging, expiry date and appearance. If the cheese already has an unusual smell, damaged packaging or suspicious marks, it is better not to buy it.
Proper storage in a clean container and at an appropriate temperature can help maintain the freshness of cheese. However, if its smell, texture or surface shows clear signs of spoilage, it is safer to discard it.
