In his message on Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day, the prime minister congratulated the nation and paid tribute to the leaders and workers of the Pakistan Movement whose political struggle and sacrifices paved the way for the creation of an independent state.

Shehbaz Sharif said the dream of an independent homeland was realised through the visionary leadership of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the sacrifices of the people who participated in the independence movement.

He said Pakistan provided its citizens with a homeland where they could live with dignity and shape their lives according to their religious and cultural values. The Constitution and laws of Pakistan, he added, guarantee the rights of all citizens without discrimination.

The prime minister said Pakistan’s journey toward development and prosperity was moving toward a brighter future. He claimed that the government had overcome difficult challenges over the past two and a half years and achieved the objective of stabilising the economy.

He said Pakistan was now moving toward the goal of becoming a developed economy. According to the prime minister, remittances from overseas Pakistanis had increased by $11.3 billion over the past two years.

Shehbaz Sharif also praised Pakistan’s armed forces for defending the country against threats and said the nation was proud of their role in protecting the homeland.

He said the armed forces had demonstrated unity, determination and exceptional courage under the leadership of the field marshal during the recent conflict.

The prime minister said Pakistan would not hesitate to make any sacrifice necessary to protect its defence, water resources and other national interests.

He further said Pakistan had emerged as a responsible country and a force for stability amid the challenging regional situation.

“Pakistan is now recognised among the nations of the world as a strong, resolute, dignified and powerful voice for peace,” he said, adding that the country was playing a constructive role in promoting peace, stability and regional cooperation.
