Under the scheme, motorcycle, rickshaw and Qingqi users will receive Rs100 per litre relief on up to 20 litres of petrol per month, while owners of cars up to 800cc will receive the same relief on up to 30 litres per month. This means maximum monthly relief of Rs2,000 for two and three wheel users and Rs3,000 for owners of cars up to 800cc.
The Prime Minister’s Office said the scheme will take effect in Islamabad from the night between Monday and Tuesday, while it will be implemented across Pakistan, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan from the night between Wednesday and Thursday. Registration for the scheme has started from today.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government fully understands the burden caused by rising global oil prices and aims to provide maximum relief, particularly to low-income groups.
Reacting to the announcement, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said the Rs100 per litre relief came as a result of Jamaat-e-Islami’s struggle against the petroleum levy. He said the party would review the scheme and announce its formal position tonight.
Hafiz Naeem made it clear that the government’s relief package would not affect Jamaat-e-Islami’s campaign against the petroleum levy. He said the party’s struggle, long march and sit-ins would continue until the petroleum levy is completely abolished.
