According to Indian media, the Shahi Mosque in Chhatri Chowk was among the structures affected by a project to widen a road between Kanthal Square and Gopal Temple.

Officials said around 900 metres of the road is being widened to 15 metres. The project is expected to affect 272 structures, including religious sites.

A video circulating on social media shows a crane removing part of the mosque's minaret. According to some media reports, a section of the minaret fell after the machine's belt broke, damaging the roof of the two-storey building.

Local Muslim representative City Qazi Khalique-ur-Rehman said prayers continue to be offered at the mosque five times a day. He also said the mosque is around 100 years old, despite reports describing it as 600 years old.

Ujjain Collector Roshan Kumar Singh said part of the mosque was damaged during the road expansion work, but no one was injured.

Officials said notices had already been issued regarding the structures affected by the project. They urged people not to believe rumours and warned of legal action against those spreading misleading or false information on social media.

The road expansion project has been launched ahead of the 2028 Simhastha Kumbh Mela to improve the movement of visitors. The Indian government has reportedly allocated around Rs980 million for the project.
