In his UN address on Tuesday, Trump strongly defended his foreign policy approach and warned that the United States could take further action against Iran if Tehran did not agree to a deal. He also defended his policies towards Venezuela and indicated that he could continue using US military power to pursue foreign policy objectives.
Trump’s meeting with Xi Jinping at the White House on Thursday produced limited publicly announced results on major issues including trade, AI, Taiwan and Iran. The most tangible outcome was an extension of a trade truce between the world’s two largest economies.
The summit also highlighted differences over Taiwan. Chinese state media reported that Xi urged Trump to oppose Taiwan independence, while the White House did not immediately provide its own detailed account of that part of the discussion.
The Iran conflict remained a major issue throughout Trump’s diplomatic week. Reuters reported that the war has disrupted energy supplies and created political and economic pressure in the United States, while Iran’s continued resistance has emerged as a major foreign policy challenge for the Trump administration.
Trump has also faced resistance from some foreign leaders over his approach to international conflicts. At the UN gathering, French President Emmanuel Macron warned against a return to a world governed by power and coercion, while Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva criticised foreign interference and called for international cooperation.
The administration rejected the suggestion that Trump’s foreign policy had stalled. A White House official said the president was focused on achieving results and pointed to what the administration considers successes in advancing US interests.
Trump’s efforts to encourage Russia and Ukraine to agree to a limited energy ceasefire have also faced difficulties, according to Reuters. Meanwhile, an agreement involving Denmark and Greenland to expand the US military presence on the Arctic island fell short of Trump’s earlier demand for US ownership of Greenland.
The developments come ahead of the US midterm elections in November, which could affect the political environment in which Trump pursues his foreign policy agenda.
