She completed her FSc Pre-Medical from a private college, dreaming of becoming a doctor one day. But due to the high merit requirements, she couldn’t get into medical college. Instead of giving up, she worked even harder. Her father and uncle kept reminding her, “Don’t lose hope — one day you’ll make it.”
Determined to move forward, Warisha decided to pursue higher education and got admitted to a private university. Her father and younger brother supported her financially and emotionally. She completed her first semester happily and moved on to the next.
But on May 3rd, 2021, in the middle of Ramadan, Warisha received a call from home that shattered her world — her father had passed away from a heart attack. She was just 20 years old.
It felt like someone had turned off all the lights in her life. She kept searching for her father’s love in every corner of the house, but it all felt like a fading dream. Even though her family stood by her, a deep loneliness took over her heart.
After her father’s death, Warisha withdrew into silence. She couldn’t express her feelings — not her exhaustion, not even her joy. Despite her family’s love, she felt alone. Depression and anxiety slowly crept into her life.
As time passed, the pressure on her to get married began to rise — a common cultural norm in her community. She was only 23, still trying to find herself and understand her dreams. The thought of marrying someone she didn’t love terrified her.
But Warisha refused to give up her freedom. She stood her ground and told her family she wanted to focus on her studies and wasn’t ready for marriage.
Her family didn’t listen. The marriage was arranged anyway — to her cousin. Warisha felt trapped in a relationship she never wanted. Her dreams were dismissed, and emotional blackmail became her daily reality.
There were nights she cried helplessly, wishing her father would just walk back through the door. He had never let her tears fall unnoticed.
Warisha had always dreamed of studying abroad, of seeing the world beyond her small town. But no one understood her mental struggles or her desire for independence. Feeling isolated, she started relying on herself to fight through depression and anxiety, enduring panic attacks along the way.
One day, while scrolling through social media, she stumbled upon a documentary by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy — a filmmaker and women’s rights activist. The film showed stories of women who had suffered violence and injustice, and it deeply moved Warisha.
She realized she didn’t have to accept the destiny others chose for her. Inspired, she secretly began learning about women’s rights, self-defense, and entrepreneurship. She promised herself that one day, she’d become financially independent and build her own life.
Warisha started tutoring students online, took the IELTS, and earned a Teacher Trainer certification in ELT. Slowly, she began rebuilding her confidence. Her hard work started to pay off — she found purpose again.
A kind professor at her university became her mentor. He guided her in finding scholarships and supported her emotionally. With his help, Warisha applied for a fully funded scholarship in Turkey.
The day she got her acceptance letter was a turning point — her moment of freedom. It was her chance to chase her dreams, escape the chains of forced marriage, and finally build a life she chose for herself.
Warisha’s story is a story of strength, resilience, and hope — proof that even in the darkest times, the human spirit can rise.
Her journey isn’t over yet, but she knows now that she’s not alone. Her faith in God has grown stronger, and she has become a bold, determined woman who makes her own decisions.
As writer Saba Khadim once said:
“Difficulties are the paths that shape a person’s character.”
The road ahead won’t be easy. She will face new challenges, doubts, and fears. But she’s determined to prove — to herself and to the world — that she’s not a victim of her circumstances.
Today, Warisha dreams of becoming a social activist, working for women’s rights and helping young girls find their voice. She’s already mentoring and motivating others — fighting not just for her own future, but for all those who’ve ever felt powerless.
Will she succeed? Only time will
tell.
But one thing is certain — she now lives by her 3 D’s:
Determination, Discipline, and Dedication.
Warisha refuses to be defined by her past. She’s rising above it — creating a new future and inspiring others to do the same.
