The singer broke down during the last Eras Tour concert in Toronto in November 2024 while performing her song Marjorie. Addressing the crowd at the time, Swift said she was “just having a bit of a moment”.
In a new episode of her Disney+ docuseries Taylor Swift: The End of an Era, the Karma hitmaker admitted she later felt awkward about crying on stage.
Speaking to her brother Austin after the show, Swift said she struggled to explain her emotions. “I got emotional. I felt like a dumbass,” she said, adding that she could not put her feelings into words despite reassurance from her brother.
Swift explained that the moment was triggered by a pre-show speech from her backup singer Kamilah Marshall, who spoke about coping with the loss of her mother in 2021 while experiencing the joy of being part of the Eras Tour.
She said Marshall shared how heartbroken she felt that her mother never got to see her perform on the tour, which stayed on Swift’s mind throughout the night. Swift added that the two often made eye contact during Marjorie because of its personal meaning connected to Marshall’s loss.
The experience also made Swift reflect on her own family, saying it reminded her how grateful she felt that her parents, Scott and Andrea Swift, were able to watch her perform. She also mentioned that Travis was present to see the show.
“It put it in perspective,” Swift said, adding that the realisation of how fortunate she felt ultimately led to the emotional moment that “cracked me wide open.”
