Researchers say that just 5 to 10 minutes of light physical activity can boost energy levels and improve mood. The findings, published in the journal Nature Human Behaviour, highlight the importance of simple daily actions such as walking, doing household chores, or taking the stairs.
The study examined the link between physical movement and emotional well-being. It found that people who stay more active tend to feel happier, and this improved mood then encourages them to stay active again, creating a positive cycle.
Researchers analyzed data from around 8,000 participants and also reviewed larger datasets covering more than 320,000 people. Participants used fitness trackers, which helped scientists measure light and moderate activities like stair climbing, walking, and daily household work.
The results showed that even non-gym activities can have a meaningful impact on emotional health. According to researchers, this means people do not need intense workouts to see mental health benefits.
Experts also noted that spending time outdoors and staying physically active can reduce stress hormones like cortisol, lower blood pressure, and improve overall mood.
They added that good mental health is not only about avoiding illness, but also about maintaining emotional balance, reducing stress, and staying socially and physically connected to the environment.
Overall, the study suggests that simple habits like taking the stairs can play an important role in improving mental well-being in everyday life.
