Sunny, a Portuguese water dog, died on Tuesday. The Obamas brought her home in 2013 while they were living in the White House. She was reportedly just over one year old when the family adopted her and would have been around 14 years old.
In a post on social media, Obama said the family, including their first dog Bo, immediately fell in love with Sunny after she joined them during his second term in the White House.
Obama described Sunny as athletic, energetic and protective of Bo. He also recalled that despite being a Portuguese water dog, Sunny disliked getting wet.
“We will miss her terribly,” Obama said, adding that he imagined Sunny was now with her “big brother” Bo, making sure he was okay.
Many US presidents have kept dogs as companions while living in the White House. However, current President Donald Trump does not have a pet at the White House.
Other presidential pets have also become well known. George H.W. Bush’s English springer spaniel, Millie, was associated with the bestselling book “Millie’s Book”. Bill Clinton’s Labrador retriever, Buddy, was also a familiar presence during his presidency.
George W. Bush’s Scottish terrier, Barney, had an official webpage and appeared in videos known as “Barneycam”. Former President Lyndon B. Johnson also drew criticism from animal lovers after being photographed lifting his beagle, Him, by the ears.
Former President Harry S. Truman was famously associated with the advice: “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.”
