The unexpected encounter knocked the windsurfer off balance, sending him plunging into the chilly waters. The whale quickly disappeared back into the deep.

Miraculously, moments later the windsurfer resurfaced with his gear. At the time of reporting, it remains unclear whether he sustained any serious injuries.

Experts say this dramatic incident comes amid the annual migration of humpback whales, as these majestic creatures journey from the California coast toward Alaska. While this yearly trek is a natural phenomenon, scientists warn it has become increasingly perilous for marine life.

So far this season, four whales have already perished along the Pacific Coast. One of these deaths on March 17 was attributed to a fatal collision with a commercial vessel.
