Joint pain affects millions of people worldwide, particularly older adults. While there is no single food that can prevent or cure joint disease, new research suggests that grapes and berries may help protect joint health thanks to a naturally occurring plant compound.
Researchers in China analyzed previous scientific studies to examine the effects of resveratrol, a polyphenol found in grapes, berries, and some other plant-based foods.
Resveratrol has been widely studied over the past few decades for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Scientists also believe the compound may help slow cellular aging, potentially supporting healthier cells over time.
According to the review, resveratrol may reduce inflammation through multiple biological pathways. Since chronic inflammation is one of the leading contributors to joint disorders such as osteoarthritis, researchers believe the compound could play a protective role.
The researchers noted that resveratrol is not easily absorbed by the body and is rapidly metabolized in the liver. However, evidence from previous studies suggests it may still help reduce the risk of joint damage and relieve symptoms associated with joint injuries and inflammation.
The authors emphasized that more clinical research is needed before resveratrol can be recommended as a treatment or used to develop medicines or supplements specifically for joint health.
For now, experts suggest that including grapes and berries as part of a balanced diet may offer potential health benefits, including support for healthy joints.
The findings were published in the Journal of International Medical Research.
