Despite their incredible ability to survive for up to three months without food, a month without water, and even 45 minutes without air, their presence inside houses is a source of both discomfort and embarrassment, particularly when visitors are around.
Yet, beyond being an unpleasant sight, cockroaches pose serious health risks. According to a medical study conducted in the United States, their infestation inside homes can significantly increase the risk of developing allergies and respiratory diseases such as asthma.
Researchers at North Carolina State University discovered a strong link between the abundance of cockroaches in residential spaces and the presence of allergy-triggering substances and bacterial compounds known as endotoxins. Endotoxins are microscopic particles released when bacteria die. Because cockroaches feed on a wide range of decaying organic matter, their digestive systems harbor a diverse population of bacteria. When these insects defecate, they release endotoxins into the indoor environment — contaminating household air and surfaces. The greater the infestation, the more polluted the air becomes.
The study, conducted in several apartment complexes in Raleigh, North Carolina, revealed that increased exposure to these bacterial particles leads to a gradual rise in the likelihood of asthma and allergic reactions among residents. Researchers further noted that in experimental trials with mice, exposure to these toxins aggravated the severity of asthma symptoms.
The study emphasized the need for further research to better understand the biological mechanisms through which these bacterial particles harm human health. However, one conclusion was clear: reducing or eliminating cockroach infestations can dramatically lower the concentration of harmful endotoxins indoors, thereby improving air quality and minimizing health risks.
