While genetics account for only a small slice around 5 to 10 percent most of the risk appears to come from factors in the surrounding environment, with air pollution taking center stage.

At the heart of this issue is benzene, a harmful chemical found in petrol. It doesn’t just stay in the fuel tank. During storage, refueling, and fuel transfer, benzene escapes into the air as vapor.

These invisible fumes may seem harmless in the moment, but over time, they can quietly affect human health.

The study highlights a striking pattern: children who lived within 250 meters of a gas station at birth showed a noticeably higher risk of developing blood cancers.

The risk climbs even further for those living within 100 meters, suggesting that distance plays a crucial role.

Health experts point out that early life especially the period during pregnancy and shortly after birth is a sensitive window. During this time, even low-level exposure to pollutants can leave a lasting mark on a child’s developing cells.

Although the research was conducted in Canada, its message travels far beyond one country. In fact, the city of Montreal showed comparatively lower risks, thanks to stricter environmental controls.

Advanced systems, known as vapor recovery units, help capture harmful fumes before they spread into the air a simple step with powerful results.

The findings serve as a wake-up call for urban planners and policymakers. Experts are urging that homes, schools, and daycare centers be built at a safe distance from gas stations.

At the same time, installing emission-control technology at fuel stations should become standard practice, not an afterthought.
