Known for her deep command of Urdu language and literature, Dr. Zehra spent over five decades teaching, mentoring, and inspiring generations of students. Her intellectual depth and calm authority made her one of the most admired educators in the country.
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his sorrow over her passing, calling it an irreparable loss for Pakistan’s academic and literary community. He noted that Dr. Zehra devoted her life to knowledge, research, and the service of humanity.
Born in Lahore, Dr. Zehra’s academic journey was as impressive as her career. She earned her BA (Honors) from Lahore College for Women University, completed her MA in Urdu from Government College University, and later pursued an MA in Asian Studies and a PhD in History from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
Over the years, she taught at several prestigious institutions including LCWU, LUMS, the National College of Arts, the School of Public Policy (Government of Pakistan), and Forman Christian College. She also served as Chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women in 2006.
Last year, she stepped away from teaching due to health issues, closing a distinguished academic chapter that shaped countless lives.
Dr. Arfa Sayeda Zehra leaves behind a legacy rooted in thought, empathy, and a lifelong commitment to education and equality, a voice that will continue to echo in Pakistan’s classrooms and beyond.
