Nipah virus is considered one of the most dangerous pathogens due to its high fatality rate and the absence of any approved treatment or vaccine. The virus is zoonotic, meaning it can spread from animals to humans, most commonly through contact with infected fruit bats or pigs, or by consuming fruit contaminated with bat saliva or urine, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In some instances, the virus can also transmit between people through close physical contact, increasing the risk of wider outbreaks.

Symptoms typically emerge within four to 14 days and often begin with flu-like signs such as fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting and sore throat. In severe cases, the infection can quickly escalate to brain inflammation, seizures, coma and even death within days. Respiratory complications, including coughing and breathing difficulties, have also been reported.

Nipah virus is classified as a biosafety level four pathogen, placing it in the same high-risk category as Ebola. Past outbreaks have recorded fatality rates ranging from 40 to 75 percent, making it one of the most lethal viral infections known.

Survivors may suffer long-term neurological effects, including persistent fatigue, behavioral changes and cognitive impairment. With no specific antiviral treatment available, medical teams rely on supportive care such as respiratory assistance and intensive monitoring.

Prevention remains the most effective strategy, with health authorities emphasizing infection control, public awareness, and measures to reduce animal-to-human transmission. Nipah outbreaks occur almost every year in parts of South and Southeast Asia, particularly in India and Bangladesh.

Although fewer than 800 cases have been reported globally, experts warn that the virus continues to pose a serious public health threat due to its severity and potential for rapid transmission.
