According to sources, a technical error was detected in the amendment when it was earlier approved by the Senate, and therefore, once the National Assembly gives its approval today, the amendment is likely to be sent back to the Senate for re-endorsement.
Insiders reveal that the Senate is expected to re-approve the 27th Amendment tomorrow. It is worth recalling that just two days ago, the Senate had already passed the 27th Amendment with a two-thirds majority.
Under this amendment, a Constitutional Court will be established, comprising judges from all High Courts. The amendment also grants the President of Pakistan lifetime immunity, and the post of Army Chief will be replaced with the newly created position of Chief of Defence Forces.
Yesterday, Federal Minister for Law, Azam Nazir Tarar, formally presented the 27th Constitutional Amendment in the National Assembly, which sparked a heated debate between the government and opposition members.
