The SBP deputy governor informed the committee that two private microfinance banks will begin operating digital wallet interoperability on July 16 and July 20, while all six participating banks are expected to complete system integration by July 31.
He added that BISP beneficiary accounts will be fully converted into digital accounts by December 31, allowing recipients to access financial services through digital wallets.
During the meeting, committee members raised concerns over limited public awareness about the digital wallet system and questioned whether BISP was ensuring that banks meet their contractual responsibilities.
The committee directed BISP to improve its implementation strategy and ensure that participating banks provide proper support and facilities to beneficiaries.
BISP Secretary Amer Ali Ahmad informed the committee that a district-wise performance report of participating banks would be presented to assess their progress and service delivery.
The committee was also briefed about action taken against a private microfinance bank following negligence in the March roof collapse incident at a BISP payment site in Rahim Yar Khan.
Officials informed lawmakers that families of each deceased beneficiary received Rs2 million in compensation, while each injured person was provided Rs500,000 for medical treatment. The compensation amount was recovered from the concerned bank’s share.
