Seventy five year-old Zhang Youxia is one of the country’s highest ranking generals and a member of the powerful Communist Party Politburo. As a key figure in China’s military command, his position places him at the very heart of decision making. He shares the vice chairmanship with Zhang Shengmin, who was appointed after another corruption scandal last year an appointment that already hinted at deeper trouble within the ranks.

Liu Zhenli, 61, oversees China’s war planning and operational readiness, making his role critical to national defense. Speculation around the investigation intensified after both officials were noticeably absent from a recent high-level meeting chaired by President Xi, an absence that quickly raised eyebrows in political circles.

President Xi has repeatedly described corruption as the greatest threat to the Communist Party, warning that the fight against it remains complex, harsh, and far from over. Supporters argue that the campaign is meant to strengthen accountability and restore public trust. Critics, however, say it may also serve as a tool to sideline political rivals and consolidate power.
