The global attention drawn by Chinese AI start-up DeepSeek has reinforced expectations around China’s innovation capacity. Analysts say Beijing is now moving from headline-grabbing advances to systematic implementation across industry.
Large state-owned enterprises (SOEs) are likely to serve as anchor adopters in an “AI-plus manufacturing” drive, embedding AI into logistics, energy systems and advanced manufacturing. The objective is structural transformation rather than incremental productivity gains.
Industry observers warn this could accelerate consolidation, as capital-intensive firms are better positioned to absorb the costs of large-scale AI integration.
Robotics and embodied intelligence
Humanoid robotics is expected to feature prominently in the new five-year framework. China has recently showcased advances in embodied intelligence, including humanoid robots performing coordinated routines during national broadcasts such as the Spring Festival Gala.
Experts point to significant improvements in mechatronics — particularly balance, motor control and dynamic locomotion — over the past year. Policymakers are likely to position robotics not merely as a research frontier but as a foundational industrial pillar tied to labour substitution and precision manufacturing.
Aerospace and commercial space
The space sector remains a strategic test case for China’s ability to translate research into commercial-industrial capability. Private firms such as LandSpace are developing reusable orbital-class launch systems, including the Zhuque-3 rocket, in an effort to compete with Western providers.
Commercial space development aligns with Beijing’s broader objective of reducing dependence on foreign aerospace technologies while expanding satellite infrastructure and launch capacity.
Supply chains and geopolitical leverage
Beyond frontier technologies, the five-year plan is expected to emphasise safeguarding industrial supply chains. China’s long-standing dominance in rare earth elements has already been leveraged through export controls, reinforcing its strategic position in global manufacturing ecosystems.
Analysts note that similar competitive dynamics are emerging in sectors such as industrial chemicals and advanced materials, where both China and the United States are vying for technological and supply-chain leadership.
As global competition intensifies, the forthcoming blueprint is likely to clarify how Beijing intends to align technological ambition with industrial policy, geopolitical positioning and long-term economic resilience.
