The rollout includes both new vehicles and existing models from 2020 onward, with a significant number coming from General Motors brands such as Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. Users signed into their Google accounts will gradually receive prompts to upgrade, though they may temporarily continue using Google Assistant.
Gemini integrates directly into infotainment systems, accessible through voice commands, touchscreen controls, or steering wheel buttons. It also connects with manufacturer-provided manuals, enabling car-specific guidance. Drivers can ask practical questions about their vehicle and receive tailored answers instead of generic information.
The system goes beyond voice commands by interpreting intent. For example, a statement about feeling cold can trigger heating and defrost functions automatically. Electric vehicle users can also check battery status conversationally without navigating menus.
Additional features include improved messaging through accurate voice-to-text, enhanced navigation via Google Maps, and a beta version of Gemini Live, which allows ongoing conversations for trip planning, learning, or entertainment during drives.
Google has also expanded functionality for commercial drivers, offering route optimization and fuel planning assistance through natural queries.
While the upgrade addresses long-standing complaints about Google Assistant’s limitations, concerns remain about AI accuracy. Industry observers note that incorrect responses in a vehicle setting could have more serious consequences than typical chatbot errors.
The rollout currently supports English in the United States, with plans to expand globally. This move is part of Google’s broader strategy to position Gemini as a unified AI interface across devices, including smartphones, homes, and now vehicles.
