Under the new plan, Islamabad will have three mayors and six deputy mayors. The city will be divided based on the three National Assembly constituencies, making administration more focused and closer to the people.

According to official sources, the new local government system will grant administrative and financial independence to the Town Corporations.

Several powers currently held by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) will be gradually transferred to these new bodies. This shift is expected to reduce delays and improve decision making at the local level.

Mayors are likely to receive key responsibilities related to cleanliness, drainage, and development projects.

Each Town Corporation will have one mayor and two deputy mayors. However, they will not be elected directly by the public, instead, Union Council chairmen will elect them. The proposed term for mayors and deputy mayors is four years.

Sources say that after approval from the federal cabinet, a presidential ordinance will be issued. Following this, the Election Commission will announce new delimitations and an election schedule.

Islamabad’s 125 Union Councils will be distributed among the three Town Corporations according to population size. Officials believe this new structure will lead to better management, faster service delivery, and stronger local governance.

The move is being seen as a practical step toward improving urban administration and addressing everyday issues faced by residents of the capital.
