Under the agreed deal, the Atlanta Hawks will receive veteran combo guard CJ McCollum and wing Corey Kispert in exchange for Young.
Sources say the Hawks had previously viewed the 27-year-old as a long-term cornerstone, but internal assessments shifted after the team showed improved results during his absence. Young missed action from October 31 to December 14, 2025, due to a knee sprain, during which Atlanta recorded a solid 13-9 record. Since his return, Young featured in five games, all of which ended in losses for the Hawks.
With performances dipping after his comeback, the Hawks’ management reportedly began working with Young’s representatives to identify a new destination that suited both parties.
According to The Athletic, the Wizards, currently in a rebuilding phase, emerged as a realistic and natural option. League sources indicate Washington had been considered a potential landing spot for Young months before the trade was finalised.
The Wizards were seeking a proven point guard and were willing to give Young the time and support needed to regain full fitness. Team officials believe his arrival can unlock the offensive potential of their young core, including Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson and Bilal Coulibaly.
The trade marks a new chapter for both franchises, with Atlanta opting for balance and experience, while Washington bets on Young to lead and accelerate its rebuild.
