The dispute began after Trump, in an interview with an Italian television channel, claimed that Meloni had repeatedly sought a photo opportunity with him during the recent G7 summit in France.

Trump reportedly said that he did not need to speak with Meloni and only did so as a gesture of kindness. He further claimed that the Italian prime minister had requested a photograph with him and that he agreed out of sympathy.

Responding to the comments, Meloni dismissed the claims and said she was genuinely surprised by the US president’s remarks.

“Donald Trump’s statements are completely made up,” she said. “I do not understand why the President of the United States chooses to behave this way toward his allies, and this is not the first time.”

The Italian premier also criticized what she described as a softer approach by Trump toward adversaries of the United States and the West.

“It is unfortunate that he does not use the same tone with the enemies of America and the Western world,” Meloni said.

In one of her strongest remarks, she declared: “There is one thing he should remember neither I nor Italy ever beg anyone.”

The controversy has further strained relations between the two allies. According to international media reports, Italy’s displeasure was also reflected in the decision by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to cancel a planned visit to the United States next week.

Tajani condemned Trump’s remarks, saying the comments directed at Meloni were insulting not only to the prime minister but to Italy as a whole.

The exchange has sparked fresh debate over diplomatic relations between Washington and Rome, with observers closely watching whether the disagreement will have any broader impact on cooperation between the two countries.
