Born in Lahore in 1958, Ameerul Azeem received his early education at Islamia School, Sant Nagar. He completed his FSc from Islamia College Railway Road before earning a BSc degree in Physics and Double Mathematics from Islamia College Civil Lines. He later completed an MBA from the University of the Punjab.
He became associated with Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba during his student years. He was elected president of the Punjab University Students Union and later served as Nazim-e-Aala of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba Pakistan. During General Zia-ul-Haq s rule, he played an active role in the movement for the restoration of student unions and endured imprisonment during the campaign.
After his student politics, Ameerul Azeem went on to hold several key positions in Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan. He served for many years as the party s Central Secretary for Information before becoming Secretary General and later Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Lahore. He was subsequently appointed Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Central Punjab.
In 2019, then Jamaat-e-Islami chief Sirajul Haq, with the consultation of the party s Central Shura, appointed him as the party s Central Secretary General, a position he held until his passing.
Ameerul Azeem also played an active role in the Lawyers Movement. During the long march for the restoration of the chief justice, he was seriously injured when a tear gas shell fired by police struck his head. The injury left a permanent scar on his forehead that remained visible throughout his life.
He is remembered within Jamaat-e-Islami as a principled, disciplined and visionary leader. He devoted much of his life to strengthening the party s organisational structure, training its workers and advancing its political struggle. His passing is being described as a significant loss for Jamaat-e-Islami.
