Under the new system, motorists will be able to pass through toll plazas without stopping, eliminating long queues and significantly reducing travel times. The barrier-free tolling mechanism will be integrated with digital payment technologies to ensure seamless movement across the country s motorway network.
The planned ITS will also be linked with the existing Safe City network, allowing real-time coordination between traffic management authorities and law enforcement agencies. Officials say the integration will enhance monitoring capabilities and enable faster responses to accidents, emergencies, and security incidents.
Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has directed authorities to accelerate the modernisation of highway operations by integrating surveillance cameras, security systems, communication networks, and electronic tolling into a unified digital platform.
In addition to digital upgrades, motorway service areas will undergo significant improvements. Authorities plan to ensure the permanent presence of Motorway Police personnel at service areas while standardising passenger facilities across the network.
Emergency response services will also be strengthened through the mandatory deployment of Rescue 1122 teams, ambulances, and fire brigades at key motorway locations to improve public safety and emergency preparedness.
Special attention is being given to major tourist and northern routes, including the Jaglot-Skardu Road, Mansehra-Kaghan-Naran Road, and Murree Expressway. These roads will receive enhanced safety infrastructure, including upgraded guardrails and improved roadside facilities.
Officials said temporary rest areas along these routes will be converted into permanent service centres to better accommodate increasing traffic volumes, particularly during peak tourism seasons.
The initiative is part of a broader government effort to bring Pakistan s transport infrastructure in line with international standards through digitalisation, improved safety measures, and enhanced passenger services.
Authorities believe the reforms will create a more efficient, secure, and user-friendly road network for commuters and commercial transport operators across the country.
