The statements follow intensified fighting along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, where Pakistani forces have carried out counter-strikes in response to what officials described as unprovoked attacks. Security sources said the operations targeted militant positions, command posts and ammunition depots, inflicting significant losses.
In a statement issued Friday, Sharif said there would be no compromise on national defence and that every act of aggression would receive a firm response. He said the armed forces, under the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, were fully prepared to address both internal and external threats.
“Pakistan has consistently promoted peace, but our integrity will never be compromised,” the prime minister said, adding that the nation stands united behind its military.
Zardari echoed those remarks in a social media message, warning that any misinterpretation of Pakistan’s pursuit of peace as weakness would be met with a comprehensive and decisive response.
Defence minister criticises Taliban
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said Pakistan had expected stability in the region following NATO’s withdrawal from Afghanistan but instead accused the Taliban government of allowing Afghan territory to be used by hostile actors.
He alleged that Afghanistan had become a “proxy of India” and criticised the Taliban’s governance record, including restrictions on women’s rights. Asif noted Pakistan’s long-standing support for Afghan refugees, saying millions had been hosted over decades and many continue to reside and work in the country.
“Our patience has reached its limit,” he said, describing the current situation as an “open confrontation” and warning that Pakistan would continue to respond firmly to any aggression.
Interior minister condemns attacks
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi condemned what he described as attempts by Afghan Taliban forces to target civilian populations. He called the alleged attack a “horrific miscalculation” and praised Pakistan’s military for what he termed a decisive and professional response.
Naqvi said aggression against civilians was intolerable and vowed that those responsible would face severe consequences.
The remarks from Pakistan’s leadership come as tensions along the border remain high, with both sides trading accusations over responsibility for the recent violence.
