In a statement posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, the prime minister said the recent surge in violence serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with a delicate ceasefire and the potentially devastating consequences of a return to full-scale confrontation.

“As we continue to work sincerely and tirelessly with our brotherly countries and international partners toward a peaceful diplomatic resolution of this conflict, particularly at a moment when the ultimate objective appears within reach, we appeal to all parties to exercise restraint and give peace another chance,” Sharif said.

The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting a diplomatic solution in coordination with regional partners, stressing the importance of avoiding actions that could derail progress toward stability and reconciliation.

He urged all sides to remain engaged in dialogue and diplomacy, describing negotiations as a far more promising path than continued violence and destruction. “Let us choose the path of peace and diplomacy over conflict and devastation, where genuine prospects for success still exist,” he added.

Sharif’s remarks came amid renewed tensions between Iran and Israel, marking the first significant exchange of fire since a ceasefire reached in April with Pakistan’s mediation efforts. The flare-up occurred despite calls for restraint from U.S. President Donald Trump.

The latest escalation followed Israeli strikes and subsequent retaliatory action by Tehran after an airstrike targeted Beirut’s southern suburbs on Saturday. The exchange has raised fresh concerns about regional stability at a time when diplomatic efforts were beginning to gain momentum.

Recent ceasefire arrangements involving Lebanon have struggled to deliver lasting calm amid continued Israeli military operations, including airstrikes, large-scale displacement orders, and the seizure of strategic locations such as the historic Beaufort Castle.

Analysts warn that the renewed cycle of retaliation risks reversing hard-won diplomatic gains and could further complicate efforts to achieve a sustainable political settlement across the region.
