Speaking on Geo News, Asif said that if Mecca was attacked, there would be no need for an agreement, as protecting the holy sites was a responsibility. “Protecting the holy sites is our duty,” he said.
The defence minister also said that Iran, as a state, would not open a new front in the region. “I cannot go into the details, but we are bound to implement the Mecca Agreement,” he said.
The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye was signed in August and provides for collective defence cooperation among the three countries.
Earlier, Asif had said that unprovoked aggression against Saudi Arabia or the spillover of the Yemen conflict into Saudi territory could make the agreement operational.
