Speaking after a walk with Xi through the gardens of Zhongnanhai, the central leadership compound near Beijing’s Forbidden City, Trump said the visit had produced major progress between the world’s two largest economies.
“We’ve made some fantastic trade deals, great for both countries,” Trump said, adding that the two sides had resolved issues “that other people wouldn’t have been able to solve”.
Xi described the visit as a “milestone” and said the two countries had established “a new bilateral relationship” based on “constructive strategic stability”.
The summit comes amid continued tensions over trade, technology restrictions, Taiwan and the ongoing Iran conflict, although both leaders publicly projected a cooperative tone during the visit.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said Xi had indicated that China was not planning to provide military assistance to Iran during the ongoing Middle East crisis.
Trump also said Xi expressed support for reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which has been heavily disrupted during the regional conflict.
“He’d like to see the Hormuz Strait open,” Trump said, adding that Xi had offered help if needed.
China’s foreign ministry later issued a statement calling for a “comprehensive and lasting ceasefire” and urged the reopening of international shipping lanes.
Despite the positive tone, the summit was overshadowed by renewed tensions over Taiwan. During opening talks on Thursday, Xi warned Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could push China and the United States toward “conflict”.
The United States officially recognises Beijing but remains legally committed to helping Taiwan defend itself through arms sales and security assistance.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio later said American policy on Taiwan remained unchanged following the meeting.
Trump did not publicly detail the agreements reached during the summit, but said China had agreed to purchase around 200 aircraft from Boeing.
He also said Beijing had expressed interest in buying American oil and soybeans as part of efforts to reduce trade tensions.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington and Beijing were also discussing “guardrails” for the use of artificial intelligence as competition between the two countries intensifies in the technology sector.
Several major US business leaders joined Trump during the trip, including Elon Musk and Jensen Huang, reflecting the strong commercial focus of the summit.
