Speaking on the occasion, renowned motivational speaker Qasim Ali Shah stated that nearly 30 percent of people worldwide suffer from some form of psychological issues. He described the establishment of the Well-Being Centre at the University of Lahore as a timely and commendable initiative in the wake of recent unfortunate incidents at the university. He said the centre will not only facilitate students in seeking treatment for mental and psychological problems but will also help in preventing such incidents in the future.
Qasim Ali Shah emphasized that other universities across Pakistan should also establish similar centres. He pointed out that in Pakistani society, mental health issues are often wrongly associated with the term “mental,” whereas the reality is quite the opposite. He added that in many countries abroad, happiness is taught as a formal subject and the services of motivational speakers are regularly utilized, while in Pakistan there is a strong need to raise public awareness on mental well-being.

Director of the Well-Being Centre Professor Dr. Shamaila Asad informed the delegation that the UOL Well-Being Centre will provide free-of-cost treatment and awareness services for students, teachers, and staff. She explained that a comprehensive assessment program has been designed across the university, under which teachers, class CRs, and GRs will refer students facing mental health challenges to the centre. Students can also approach the centre directly on their own.
Professor Dr. Shamaila Asad further stated that the center has recruited clinical psychologists, counseling psychologists, and health psychologists who will conduct assessments and provide guidance and support to individuals in need.
