The findings indicate that video games are more than just entertainment. Researchers identified a small but statistically significant positive relationship between gaming and cognitive performance, with the strongest improvements observed in memory-related tasks.

The study found that gamers generally achieved better scores in memory tests than non-gamers. Researchers believe this is because many games require players to remember information, monitor multiple events simultaneously, make quick decisions, and develop strategies under pressure.

Repeated exposure to these mental challenges may strengthen memory over time, effectively acting as a form of cognitive training. Many games also demand continuous attention to several tasks at once, helping keep the brain actively engaged.

The research team conducted three types of analyses, including comparisons between gamers and non-gamers, evaluations of experimental studies, and assessments of the relationship between gaming duration and cognitive performance.

Researchers focused on five major cognitive domains: memory, spatial ability, visual attention, cognitive control, and intelligence.

While gamers also showed modest improvements in spatial skills, visual attention, cognitive control, and certain intelligence tests, memory was the only area where the positive effects were consistently strong and statistically significant.

The researchers cautioned that not all video games produce the same outcomes. The studies reviewed involved different types of games, including action titles and brain-training games, as well as participants of varying ages and research methods, which contributed to differences in the results.

The authors also emphasized that it is still too early to conclude that video games can significantly improve all aspects of everyday cognitive functioning. They called for more long-term research to determine how long these benefits last and whether they translate into real-world improvements.

Health experts say that playing video games in moderation can be beneficial for mental stimulation. However, they stress that gaming should be combined with a balanced lifestyle that includes healthy nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and controlled screen time.

According to the researchers, when used responsibly as part of a healthy routine, video games may provide not only entertainment but also meaningful support for certain cognitive functions, especially memory.
