Google Maps Gets a Brain Upgrade, New ‘Ask Maps’ AI and See-Through Buildings Change How We Navigate

In a move that could reshape the way people explore the world, Google Maps has rolled out one of its biggest updates in more than a decade. The new upgrade brings artificial intelligence into the driver’s seat with a feature called ‘Ask Maps,’ allowing users to ask questions in plain language instead of typing simple search terms.

The feature works much like having a local guide in your pocket. Instead of searching for “tennis court,” a user can now ask a more real life question, such as where to find a tennis court with lights for evening games, or a hair salon that specializes in curly hair. The system scans a wide range of information from reviews and photos to websites and past user activity to produce answers that feel surprisingly personal.

According to Google, the AI tool draws insight from nearly 300 million places worldwide and around 500 million user reviews, helping it offer suggestions that are not just accurate but also relevant to each person’s habits and preferences.

Another noticeable change is the redesign of driving navigation. The map will now show certain buildings in a transparent style, making it easier for drivers to see what lies ahead. This subtle visual trick helps users spot upcoming turns sooner and understand the road layout at a glance something that could reduce last-second lane changes and confusion on busy streets.

Speaking to ABC News, Google Maps Vice President Miriam Daniel described the update as a major step forward. She noted that people often rely on maps when they are about to step into the real world, and the goal is to make that transition from planning to action as smooth as possible.

The AI upgrade also helps travelers discover local attractions, landmarks, and restaurants more easily. When searching for popular spots in a city, the app can display photos, ratings, reviews, and practical details such as whether a restaurant offers takeout or how long the wait might be.

The new features began rolling out to mobile users on Thursday and will appear gradually across devices. Google has also announced plans to integrate the AI tools into Apple CarPlay in the near future, although the full timeline for deeper car-system integration is still being finalized.

With AI now woven into everyday navigation, Google Maps is quietly turning from a simple map into something closer to a digital travel companion one that not only shows the road ahead but also helps decide where it might lead.
