According to a report by Android Authority, the latest beta version of Google Maps for Android includes a new option called “Prefer Shade”, which helps pedestrians choose routes with more shade and less direct sunlight.
This feature could be especially handy during the daytime when ultraviolet rays are at their peak, offering users some protection from harsh sunlight while they’re on foot.
What’s clever is that the same feature could be equally useful in winter, instead of avoiding the sun, users might pick sunny routes to enjoy a warm stroll.
Right now, the feature is still being tested, and it’s unclear how exactly Google Maps determines which routes have more shade. The company hasn’t announced a release date yet, but once it’s ready, “Prefer Shade” will likely appear under the Trip Options tab.
In short, Google seems to be turning navigation into a more thoughtful experience, not just about where you’re going, but how you get there.
