The update allows users to customize their main feed by selecting topics and interests they want to see more frequently. The feature is designed to make content recommendations more relevant to individual preferences.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said the change is aimed at improving the overall user experience on the app.
However, the update does not increase the visibility of posts from accounts that users already follow. Instead, the personalization system focuses on interest-based content, requiring users to specify topics they are interested in.
Mosseri acknowledged that users often complain that their posts do not always reach their followers. He explained that while following accounts helps improve the user experience, recommendation algorithms can sometimes dominate the main feed, reducing the visibility of content from followed accounts.
To address this issue, Instagram continues to offer a dedicated “Following” feed, allowing users to view posts exclusively from the accounts they follow.
The expanded personalization feature is now available to all Instagram users, providing them with more control over the content recommended by the platform s algorithm.
