According to the announcement, Grok will work alongside Google’s generative AI systems. The main goal of this move is to connect the military’s vast stores of data with advanced AI tools, allowing faster analysis and smarter decision making.

Speaking on Monday at SpaceX headquarters in Texas, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that some of the world’s most advanced AI models would soon be available across both classified and unclassified defense networks. He confirmed that Grok is expected to become operational within the Defense Department later this month.

Hegseth explained that the U.S. military holds decades of valuable data from combat missions and intelligence operations. ‘AI is only as strong as the data it learns from,’ he said, adding that the Pentagon will ensure the system is fed with the right information to make it effective and reliable.

However, the timing of the decision has raised eyebrows. Grok has recently been under fire for allegedly generating unauthorized fake and sexually explicit images.

Following these allegations, Malaysia and Indonesia imposed bans on the chatbot, while the United Kingdom’s online safety regulator launched a formal investigation. In response, Grok restricted its image generation and editing features to paying users only.

The use of AI in national security has long been a subject of debate within the U.S. government. In late 2024, the Biden administration introduced a framework allowing AI use in security agencies but placed firm limits on issues such as civil rights violations and automated control of nuclear weapons. It remains unclear whether these safeguards will continue under the Trump administration.

During his speech, Hegseth stressed the need to speed up innovation within the military. He said progress can come from anywhere and must move quickly and with clear purpose to keep defense systems sharp and modern.

He also stated that military AI systems would operate without ideological pressure and would be used strictly for lawful military objectives. ‘The Pentagon’s AI will not answer to political agendas,’ he said.

Elon Musk has previously promoted Grok as an alternative to mainstream chatbots, positioning it as more open and less restricted. Still, the chatbot’s past links to controversial statements and hateful content continue to cast a shadow. So far, the Pentagon has not issued a detailed response addressing these concerns.

As AI becomes more deeply woven into national defense, the decision to adopt Grok highlights both the promise and the risks of relying on powerful digital tools in matters of global security.
