The project has been launched in collaboration with the Saudi Transport General Authority and the Medina Region Development Authority, with the aim of introducing modern automated transport technology to religious sites and providing better travel facilities to pilgrims.
According to officials, the Robobus is an electric and fully automated minibus, which has a capacity of 20 passengers at a time. It works on a modern artificial intelligence system and is equipped with modern sensors, high-resolution cameras and lidar technology, through which the vehicle moves safely by recognizing the surrounding environment.
Saudi officials say the project aims to test how effectively and safely autonomous vehicles can operate at important religious sites.

In addition, the quality of service, operational efficiency and visitor experience will also be tested so that such vehicles can be introduced to other cities in Saudi Arabia in the future.
A specific route of about 700 meters has been prepared for the Robobus in the inner courtyard of the Quba Mosque, where it will transport pilgrims and worshipers from one point to another under an automated system.
According to officials, the trial phase will last for 60 days, during which the vehicle’s performance, coordination with the surrounding infrastructure and data obtained through digital maps will be thoroughly evaluated.
Saudi Arabia has been working rapidly on artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles and smart city projects in recent years, while the government plans to expand the modern and environmentally friendly transport system across the country in the future.
