The Premier League season ended with Arsenal crowned champions for the first time in 22 years while rivals Tottenham escaped relegation on the final day of the campaign.
It was a season full of surprises including Liverpool’s failed title defence despite major spending and Sunderland’s remarkable achievement of qualifying for European football after promotion.
Arsenal were described as deserved champions after finally ending years of disappointment under manager Mikel Arteta. Their success was built on a strong defence led by goalkeeper David Raya and defenders Gabriel and William Saliba while Declan Rice was named player of the year.
Manchester City finished second in Pep Guardiola’s final season at the club. Although City won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup they could not keep pace with Arsenal in the title race.
Manchester United secured third place in a major turnaround under Michael Carrick who guided the club back into the Champions League after replacing Ruben Amorim. Bruno Fernandes played a key role while new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo strengthened the attack.
Aston Villa enjoyed another successful campaign under Unai Emery by returning to the Champions League and winning the Europa League. Bournemouth also impressed by qualifying for Europe for the first time in their history under manager Andoni Iraola.
Sunderland were considered one of the biggest success stories of the season after finishing seventh and qualifying for Europe despite many predictions of relegation.
Brighton and Brentford also exceeded expectations while Chelsea endured a disappointing season that ended without European qualification despite several managerial changes.
Liverpool suffered a difficult campaign after winning the title last season. The team struggled throughout the year while tensions reportedly grew between manager Arne Slot and star forward Mohamed Salah.
At the bottom of the table Tottenham were described as one of the biggest disappointments of the season. Managerial instability poor performances and confusion behind the scenes pushed the club close to relegation before survival was secured on the final day.
West Ham Burnley and Wolves were relegated after difficult campaigns with all three clubs struggling for consistency throughout the season.
Phil McNulty’s review described Arsenal as the most remarkable side of the season while Tottenham were labelled the biggest shambles both on and off the pitch.
