Cricket Australia confirmed that Marsh will miss the three match ODI series against Pakistan and wicketkeeper batter Josh Inglis has been appointed as the new captain for the tour.

Mitchell Marsh was recently playing for Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League but missed the team’s last match. He returned to Australia after the game against Rajasthan Royals on May 19 and was expected to lead the side in Pakistan before his injury ruled him out.

Reports also suggest that Marsh’s participation in the upcoming ODI and T20 series against Bangladesh remains uncertain. Australia will begin the ODI series against Bangladesh on June 9 while the T20 series starts on June 17.

Josh Inglis will now captain the Australian side in Marsh’s absence. Regular captain Pat Cummins and star batter Travis Head are also unavailable because they are still involved in the IPL playoffs.

Australia will also be without fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc for the Pakistan series. Players including Cooper Connolly Xavier Bartlett and Ben Dwarshuis were not initially selected due to IPL playoff commitments.

Mitchell Marsh was in outstanding form during the recent IPL season scoring 563 runs in 13 matches with an impressive strike rate of 163.18. He finished as the seventh highest run scorer of the tournament.

Australia are now expected to test new opening combinations against Pakistan. Matthew Short could open with a new partner while Alex Carey may also be promoted up the batting order.

The three match ODI series between Pakistan and Australia will begin on May 30 in Rawalpindi. The second and third matches will be played in Lahore on June 2 and June 4.
