Pakistan cricket team all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz has been penalized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for violating its anti-doping rules.

In a statement issued on Friday, the ICC said the 32-year-old cricketer’s doping sample contained Carboxy-THC, a prohibited substance, following which disciplinary action was taken under the ICC Anti-Doping Code.

According to the ICC, Mohammad Nawaz’s doping sample was collected on February 7, 2026, after Pakistan’s T20 World Cup match against the Netherlands in Colombo. The presence of the banned substance was confirmed in the test results, leading to an investigation.

Earlier in April, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had submitted Mohammad Nawaz’s medical history to the ICC after reports emerged that he had failed a doping test conducted during the T20 World Cup held in Sri Lanka and India.

The ICC stated that Mohammad Nawaz accepted the anti-doping rule violation and also established that the prohibited substance was used outside of competition and was not linked to improving his cricket performance.

Initially, the ICC imposed a three-month suspension on Mohammad Nawaz. However, the ban was considered effective from May 1, the date when the player voluntarily accepted a provisional suspension.

The ICC further said that Mohammad Nawaz agreed to participate in a drug rehabilitation program, which resulted in the reduction of his ineligibility period from three months to one month.

Since the Pakistani all-rounder had already served more than two and a half months under provisional suspension, the ICC lifted his ban. The cricket body added that no further suspension would be imposed if Nawaz completes the rehabilitation program to the ICC’s satisfaction.

However, under anti-doping regulations, Mohammad Nawaz’s performance in the match against the Netherlands and all matches played after that until May 1 have been disqualified from the official record.

This is not the first time Pakistani cricketers have faced action over doping violations.

In 2006, ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif failed drug tests and received bans of two years and one year respectively. Former leg-spinner Yasir Shah was also handed a three-month suspension in 2015 after failing a doping test.
