Writing in The Mirror, Bond described the King’s approach as a “powerful shield to protect the institution,” explaining that his relentless work ethic is designed to drown out the constant noise of scandal surrounding the royal family.
Bond suggested that this effort is aimed at ensuring the monarchy remains stable and respected when Prince William eventually inherits the throne, with Charles determined to hand it over in strong shape.
However, the former BBC presenter noted that the original source of this steely dedication was the King’s mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, who guided the monarchy through decades of crises while maintaining strong public support. For King Charles, Bond said, the challenge is considerably tougher.
She pointed out that persistent headlines involving Prince Andrew, the rift with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and scrutiny of royal finances have contributed to a gradual decline in public approval.
According to Bond, the King has responded by increasing his workload. She wrote that he is focused on protecting his mother’s legacy, establishing his own identity as monarch and eventually passing the crown to Prince William in good condition.
Bond also recalled that even Charles’s own sons have spoken about his dedication, remembering occasions when they found him late at night at his desk, buried in paperwork and correspondence.
She added that, much like Queen Elizabeth II, who carried out her final public engagement at the age of 96 just days before her death, King Charles is likely to continue working until the very end.
